COMBINING PREVIOUS LGPS MEMBERSHIP

If you re-join the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) and have previous LGPS pension rights from a previous membership, you have what are called ‘deferred benefits’ within the Scheme.
You can normally choose whether to:
- Combine your previous LGPS pension rights from your old job with your current active membership, enabling you to enjoy one set of benefits based on your entire membership and linked to the final pay in your current job, or
- Keep them separate.
Unless you make a positive option to combine your previous LGPS membership, your earlier membership(s) will remain separate. Normally, Scheme members must choose to combine any previous periods of LGPS membership within 12 months of re-joining the Scheme.
