DESIGNATING BODIES

Like scheduled bodies, designating bodies are listed in a schedule to the LGPS regulations. If you work for a designating body, your employer has the power to state who, within your organisation, can join the Scheme.

If your employer decides you are eligible to join the Scheme, you should automatically be entered into the LGPS from your first day of employment if you have a contract of employment of 3 MONTHS OR MORE and are under age 75.

Membership isn't compulsory however - you can cancel your membership at any time. We sometimes call this 'opting-out'.

Most people will nearly always be better off by joining their employer's occupational pension scheme and your employer, union and the government all recommend that you join.
