What happens if I change jobs?
Find out more about the different options when you change jobs within the LGPS or move to a new job outside of the Scheme:
- I change employer but remain in the LGPS
- I stop working for a LGPS employer
- My job is transferred to a private contractor
Can I opt out of the LGPS?
Yes. Although membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) is automatic in many cases, it isn't compulsory - you can cancel your membership at any time. We sometimes call this 'opting-out'.
- If you wish to opt out within your first three months of membership, you must contact your employer.
- If you wish to opt out after three months of membership, you must contact the Fund on 0151 242 1392.
There are however considerable benefits of remaining a member of the LGPS. Any decision to cancel your membership should be carefully considered, with financial advice greatly recommended.
